My husband’s culture has opened my eyes to foods I never knew I needed, how could I have not known these foods before I met him? Middle Eastern Burek is one of those foods that I can no longer live without.
Middle Eastern Burek typically can have beef, potatoes or cheese in it. My favorite is cheese, of course! I am always excited when I go to my in laws house and burek is on the table. I feel so spoiled by my in laws and like I married into the right family.
In the effort of convenience, I have made a few shortcuts so that I can enjoy burek on the regular:
- Use a mixture of feta and mozzarella cheese, typically burek is made with farmers cheese.
- Spring roll wrappers are so much easier to use than phyllo dough. Phyllo dough is so temper-mental, I always end up ripping it and get so frustrated.
- Air-fry the burek instead of deep frying, just for convenience and to slightly lower the calories. If you prefer frying and have the energy, definitely go for it!
Give this recipe a try the next time you are in the mood for something cheesy and crispy. It’s a definite plus that it is only 6 ingredients and is ready in a few minutes!
Enjoy!
Middle Eastern Burek
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 1 cup Crumbled Feta
- 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella
- 1 tbsp Za'atar
- Fresh Cracked Pepper to taste
- 18 Spring Roll Wrappers
- Neutral Oil to brush the burek
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the feta, mozzarella, za'atar and pepper.
- Lay out the spring roll wrappers diaganollay, diamond shaped.
- Place about 2 tablespoons of the cheese mixture in the middle of the wrapper. Shape the filling into a line across the middle.
- Fold the two sides into each other so they are almost touching in the middle. Then, fold the bottom corner over the middle so it is completely covering the cheese and the other corners.
- Press firmly on the middle, smashing the cheese mixture and roll. Keep the pressure firm to ensure a tightly sealed burek. Seal the edge with a little water.
Air-Fryer
- Brush with oil evenly and cook on 400 degrees for 5 minutes. The edges will be golden and the wrapper crispy. Serve immediately.
Deep Fry
- In a medium sized pot, heat 2 inches of oil to medium high heat and fry for 2 minutes on each side. Just until golden and crispy. Serve immediately.
